Hi guys
I thought you might like to see this. After my 9 year old son, Joe, built the FC Koln stadium out of Lego, we came over from England to see the game v Hoffenheim.
I am sorry we did not bring you any luck but your supporters are immense. The atmosphere was so much better than the English Premier League.
I know times are tough right now but there was enough evidence from what I saw to suggest you can turn your season around.
I have followed Koln ever since you played Ipswich in 1981 and we hope to return again very soon.
Here is Joe’s video diary of his weekend.

 :oezil:

if you found the atmosphere and support amazing against hoffenheim, i wonder what you would have called it in our home game against red star belgrade... (read: we weren't too happy with our own performance against, but considering the situation one might call that overexpecting.)

anyway, we're happy that you and joe had a good time.

by the way, as i am doing a bit of groundhopping myself: how is the situation ipswich - tickets, crowds, support? i haven't had the chance to visist yet, unfortunately.

Hi
Would have loved to have seen the Belgrade game, I hope you beat Arsenal.
The Hoffenheim game was disappointing but as you say probably expected.
But we loved the pre-match atmosphere and the noise from your fans. Unfortunately, when you are at the bottom of the table, every mistake gets punished.
The difference between the German and English leagues is you have not forgotten football is all about the fans and the club, not just money.
I love watching German football and visiting the stadia. There is something still unique about them all.
The Premier League is beginning to lose that but the lower leagues in England are not so bad.
Regards Ipswich, it is easy to get tickets as we are only getting around 15,000 fans at the moment.
But if you ever struggle to get hold of any, message me and I’ll sort some for you.
The stadium is pretty good but our glory days are long gone.
I grew up watching Wark, Thijssen and Muhren. We are nowhere near as good as that side now.

Hey Phil,

thanks for the cheer up. We can use it. Very hard times for a supporter of Koeln. So glad that you enjoyed your stay despite the result of the match.

Please come back anytime. I'm sure with a better result.

As i expected you were also at Gladbach - Mainz, well it is not so funny here to support both teams ;)
If he grews up more maybe he should decide between the Jedis (FC) and the Dark Force (Bauern)
May the Goat be with you!

Yes we were but only so we could see two games in two days in the same area. Long way to come for one game.
Joe just loves German football and is not local so the rivalry hasn’t really registered with him yet. Don’t be too harsh on him, he’s only 9.
But he preferred Koln - probably influenced by his dad!
He even presented the club with a miniature of his Lego stadium when we visited the Geissbockheim.
And if it is any consolation, Gladbach were very poor, particularly in the first half, and probably should have lost.
I know Koln were not great against Hoffenheim but you were better than both Gladbach and Mainz that weekend.
You have games you can win coming up, I wish you well.
The only thing I didn’t like about German football was VAR. Kills the passion of the game.

Hi Phil, cool that you enjoyed your visit to Müngersdorf. I'm English and my uncle (and his elderly mother) are long suffering season ticket holders at Portman Road. I definitely need to get to a game sometime when I'm in England next. There's a UK FC fanclub that you can find on Facebook if you're interested. They're mainly based in the north and come over for games serval times a season (four for Mainz away next). My FC fanclub have formed a friendship with Barrow as that's the team a lot of them follow and Conference football is brilliant and a welcome change from the sanitised Bundesliga.
Wat sull dä Quatsch? Haltet an FC in Müngersdorf.

That’s great. I’ll look them up, thanks.
We see quite a few Fortuna Düsseldorf fans at Ipswich. They come over twice a season.
But my allegiance in Germany lies with Koln.
It’s interesting you say the Bundesliga is sanitised.
I find German football refreshing compared to the money obsessed Premier League.
English football is losing touch with its fans, particularly at the highest level.
I’m hoping to come over again later in the season.
My two sons have loved German football ever since we got to know a load of German holidaymakers when we visited Turkey a few years ago.
Apart from Ipswich, I think they watch more of your football than the Premier League.
And please pass on my sympathies with your Ipswich relatives, it’s tough watching us st the moment.
